Genetic Improvement of Local Cattle Breeds in West Africa: A Review of Breeding Programs
نویسندگان
چکیده
Cattle are one of the most important livestock species in West Africa, providing multiple services to farmers and contributing national economies. Various breeding strategies have been implemented enhance their productivity improved farmer livelihoods. This review describes cattle experiences across spanning N’Dama breed Mali, Senegal, The Gambia breeds Azawak Zebu, Fulani taurine Baoulé Burkina Faso. main objectives programs optimize meat milk performance Zebu as well trypanotolerance cattle. In some cases, “closed nucleus” schemes proven limited so evolved into “open schemes. Recent community-based shown promise. major challenges remain defining realistic securing involvement stakeholders. All reviewed here funded externally within development or research projects that often too short yield tangible genetic improvement, whether they will continue beyond those is uncertain. highlights need for continuing government support ensure sustainability local programs.

Application of myostatin in sheep breeding programs: A review
Myostatin or growth and differentiation factor 8 (GDF8), has been known as the factor causing double muscling phenotypes in which a series of mutations make the myostatin protein inactive, hence disabling it to regulate the deposition of muscle fibre. This phenotype happens with high frequency in a breed of sheep known as the Texel. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) studies show that a portion of t...

Different livestock sectors as beef industries get benefit from the production of male animals while dairy industries get benefit from the milk production by the female animals. Therefore, it is obvious need to produce the animals of desired sex which can be achieved by predetermining the sex of conceptus at the time of conception i.e. pre determination of sex may be of great economic importanc...
متن کاملChallenges and opportunities in genetic improvement of local livestock breeds
Sufficient genetic variation in livestock populations is necessary both for adaptation to future changes in climate and consumer demand, and for continual genetic improvement of economically important traits. Unfortunately, the current trend is for reduced genetic variation, both within and across breeds. The latter occurs primarily through the loss of small, local breeds. Inferior production i...
